A Matter of Time is the first documentary from Yellow Bird Project (YBP), an organization that collaborates with 50+ musicians to raise awareness and funds for various charities, generally through the sale of band-designed T-shirts. In 2008, Calder worked with YBP, designing a T-shirt on behalf of The New Pornographers to raise money for the ALS Society of BC after her mother was diagnosed with the disease. Calder’s mother passed away three years later. Calder had been her primary caregiver and, during this difficult period, fulfilled her mother’s dream and hers by writing and recording her first solo album. She converted her mother’s living room into a make-shift recording studio so that she could continue her caregiving responsibilities while working around the clock in what became a race against time -- to complete the album in time for her mother to hear it. The documentary charts this period: from Calder's early days with The New Pornographers, through a chance encounter with her long lost uncle (Carl Newman, lead singer of the band), to the 2010 release of her aforementioned solo debut, "Are You My Mother?". The film blends together interviews, animation, archive footage and re-enactments, combined with the stunning backdrop of Kathryn’s music to bring together a remarkable story of love and commitment in the face of an incurable disease.
