Law & Order - without the order

 Alice's life turns tragi-comic when she is thrown unprepared into the lowest levels of the downtown criminal courts as a public defender. Some of her clients are guilty and some are innocent, but they are all colorful, bizarre and terribly desperate. Alice must serve her clients while balancing the competing interests of the judges, lawyers, social workers, translators and guards who populate this chaotic, labyrinthine universe. As she fights to defend her clients, sometimes even against themselves, Alice's patience and compassion are constantly tested. Luckily, her tenacity, sense of humor and dark, comic wit keep her afloat and occasionally, she manages to strike a few small blows for justice in the world
